COH: #143 Old West
Posted By Miss Jocelyn Tzahala on September 23, 2008 | Category: Homeschooling
Welcome to the 143rd Carnival Of Homeschooling the Old West edition. Things were a might different back then in the Old West and with recent happenings I thought it best suited this week’s carnival. Let’s take a treck out to the open plains and homesteads, where schoolin’ didn’t consume the days, it was just a part of life.
Jacque at Walking Therein is busy at her homestead taking care of the New Goat Kids?? :O and incorporating having to do research for Wilbur, the wobbly goat, in their homeschool.
Sebastian at the Percival Blakeney homestead – ok Academy sits down and talks with her kids “about a comedy skit making fun of homeschoolers and was surprised by their reactions” in “I Need To Listen To My Kids More“.
You must always be frugal, especially out west, and spend your money wisely to make your homestead prosper. NerdFamily shares some Frugal Homeschooler: Vocabulary and Spelling links at Nerd Family Things.
Spunky at Spunky Homeschool shares a special story about A Mother’s Devotion, who “who has waited 48 years to finally teach her daughter to read. Most mothers are anxious for the day their child can read on their own.”
Ah sweet times on the homestead, Dawn Adams at Day by Day Discoveries shares a drawing from her daughter’s French class in How Sweet, I Think.

Thomas J. West does some investigating reporting on the posed question “Are First Act Musical Instruments Worth the Low Price?” over at Thomas J. West Music.
NerdMom at Nerd Family puts on the badge of, not Sheriff, but of parent and why there is Yet Another
Reason We Homeschool because “If you don’t like the influence of the system on your child the only thing you can really do to stop it is to remove the child from the situation.”
Dana shares her thoughts on a recent British article about the future Homeschool Outlaws – uh – “roaming gangs of homeschooled thugs” in Homeschooled kids heading towards criminality posted at Principled Discovery.
Robert Pondiscio presents Giving Homeschooling a Bad Name posted at The Core Knowledge Blog.
Are you poisoning your children? is the question Rose at Learning at Home asks about certain products. Interesting what she uncovers.
It’s always wise to look into what tax options you have, especially for home-educators. Curt at Save Money Homeschooling answers the What Tax Advantages Are Available to Homeschoolers? question.
Barbara Frank at Barbara Frank Online financial advice to secure a “A Future of Financial Freedom” for your children. “Every day we hear more scary economic news, most of it due to the actions of people who did not live within their means. But we can teach our children not to be like them.”
Getting everyone gathered around at the Town Square Tammy at The Life Without School Community Blog “explains the recent political events in California and how the three California state homeschool organizations have worked together to handle the ordeal: The secular homeschooling community is an important part of our country’s future. And so is the Christian homeschooling community. When we can work together, and show that our homeschooling rights run deeper than personal conviction, that they are about democracy, freedom, and independence, for everyone, then we will send a much stronger message than we ever could alone.” in Homeschooling Advocacy and the Secular Community, by Tammy Takahashi.
Laura at Practical Homeschooling shares with the town the September Contest. Stop by for details!
The Post in the Old West was the place where you got the news from the outside world, and Kim at Works in Progress shares the Finding Great Reads.
Cindy, a mother of eleven (ages 24-2) at Three Syllables “gives practical advice to a new mom just beginning homeschooling her young children” posts “Homeschooling Young Children”.
Denise at Let’s play math! shares a Review: “Kiss My Math” a book that might help your kids get through algebra.
College Degrees presents State-Licensed Vs. Accredited Online Degree Programs posted at TheCollegeDegrees.Com Blog.
Kris B at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers wants to share her great find with everyone and posts A Review of Christian Kids Explore Biology…Studying Science.
ChristineMM posts her book review of The Way I See It, a collection of Autism article, posted at The Thinking Mother.
The Post may have brought the news from afar but the train station brought the newcomers and travelers, and this train is bringing the Soultravelers3 from soultravelers3, who want to share ideas that “worked well for us in Santiago de Compostela in Spain” in Pint-sized Pilgrim’s Joy In Learning.
One of the most-welcome known travelers, at least here in Indiana, was Johnny Appleseed, and being it’s September Beverly Hernandez writes about His Birthday posted at Beverly’s Homeschooling Blog , including printable worksheets to learn about Johnny Appleseed and celebrate his birthday.
Bringing some far away ideas “Fly me to the Moon” Bogusia Gierus at Nucleus Learning shares a great science movie for kids.
A train brings things in and takes things out. When kids graduate from high school some head off to college, and MBB at Money Blue Book Personal Finance Blog explains Why College Students Should Apply For Student Credit Cards before taking off.
A place to go and sit down for a cup of coffee and perhaps talk for a minute or two with other homestead Momma – the Cafe. Kate at A Simple Walk sits down with a cup of black coffee with thoughts about “One Week Down – A Lifetime To Go“.
There to offer some encouragement Christine at Just a Thought…. lets other homeschoolers know to Lighten Up It’s Not All About Academics.
Sagar Satapathy at Smart Teaching offers more of that god stuff – not coffee – but links & resources for homeschoolers with 60+ Open Courseware Collections to Help You Be a Better Teacher.
Homemade and on the table when you want it Shelly at Homemade Homeschoolers presents The HMHS Podcast Network where they’re inviting homeschoolers to submit their own homemade podcasts.
“I want this and this. Oh and maybe one of those!” Remembering the Olsen’s Mercantile store from Little House on the Prairie and all the goodies in the jars I share with you Miss Amanda’s post on her My Favorite Things – Er – Sites posted at The Daily Planet.
With a very few supplies HowToMe shows How To Make A Quick Easel posted at HowToMe.
No need to purchase anything here, but perhaps some fabric to make a smaller jumper after reading (ahem and doing) Carletta at Successful Homeschooling’s tips on Looking Good in Your Denim Jump. “Simple fitness tips for homeschool moms.”
One thing I love to use myself are Erasable Pens. The 3 Moms presents shares about why her kids love them too at Happy to be at Home.
Though there were no T.V.s back in the Old West rules and special treats were still given, and Stephanie presents T.V. Time Rules posted at Adventures in the 100 Acre Wood.
Do these kids need to visit the Doc’s? Uh, no wanting to “mark out the prepositional phrases” in a hymn should be normal. Christine Moers at welcome to my brain . net presents Reason #135,303 I love home education.
Perhaps the Doc can give Erica Burgan at The Sojourner a dose of encouragement When You Just Don’t Feel Like Homeschooling (and Neither Do Your Kids!). Ever have one of those days?
Kara writes about Childhood Obesity: The Educational Cost at Britannica Blog, and what can be done about obesity in America.
April Duritza shares about a site called Alison designed to Improve Yourself (or Your Child) posted at ChoosyHomeschooler Blog.
Henry Cate at Why Homeschool talks about different ways and Suggestions for helping children to learn self-motivation. No need for any diagnose here. Mr. Cate has it covered, but if you care to share?
Is homeschooling THE open range for everyone or If you don’t homeschool, you’re a heathen? as Andrea at Notes From A Homeschooling Mom discusses.

When you’re out on the range you may need something to do to kill the time on rests, and Alvaro Fernandez shares some Games for the Brain posted at SharpBrains.
Shanna Clark at Learning at His Feet shares more great ways to pass the time “the old fashion way” in Chalk School.
Sandra at On Living By Learning brings in some Digital Learning Home School links and resources.
I ride off now leaving you with a Homeschoolbuzz.com Review, by Kathy about a book written on Homeschooling: A Family’s Journey. I hope you had a swell time traveling through the Old West town with me today, and I hope you were able to check out some of the great links that were included this week.

Thank you for submitting an article, and if there are any bad links please let me know! Thanks also to JoeM (The Wanted) and google for various photos. Next week the Carnival of Homeschooling will be at Principled Discovery. Make sure you send in your submission.
Blessings!

HOw fun!! I love how you set this up. I’m thinking about submitting to this carnival, but I have so many things I’m doing on the computer that I don’t want it to eat up any more of my time… Do you ever feel like the computer is a bottomless hole? No matter how much you pour into into it, it always takes more!!
Blessings! in our Lord and Savior,
