Larryboy, Can I Borrow Your Plungers?
Posted By Miss Jocelyn Tzahala on July 29, 2010 | Category: Homekeeping, Homesteading, In The Life Of A Country Girl, Life in Costa Rica
I went to bed last night with laundry on my mind. We haven’t had a washer at our disposal for nearly a month. Though we had some very sweet friends let us use theirs several times, everything has been handwashed… or should I say plunged (a friend let mom know a toilet plunger works best for handwashing – brilliant!). I was not looking forward to rushing to handwash my clothes, which were nearly all dirty and then have to wait for them to hang dry. I have no problem with hang-drying clothes but it is so humid here that it takes seemingly forever. We have a dryer but didn’t want to dry any stains in with the clothes only being plunged. What a blessing it was to wake up today and find a friend brought us a washer to use (can someone say halleluYah!?) and I would not have to handwash or wait for clothes to hang-dry, hoping it was all done before the get-together tonight!
We took a trip to Nicaragua last weekend to renew our visas in Costa Rica, and the bus rides are terrible. I was nausea the entire time and had a pounding headache for three days and still when we got back home. The Littles’ stomachs do not agree with traveling either, which is not a pretty sight. I completely agree with Jane Austen on this one “There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” After 0 hours of sleep, nearly having a heart-attack because I forgot Dad and Eric’s passports in the scanner, 8 bus changes, 10hours on a bus, 3 Littles puking and another close one, 3 days of turkey sandwiches (no kitchen at the hotel), and a sigh of relief as we opened the front gate…. I never want to do that again.
My days seem to be busier than ever before, but the endeavours I am working on are going to be of good use to others and our family and the Kingdom. Trying to keep everything in moderation and captivity of the goal of which I aim, and not to get caught up in my own thing though. I hope to be showing you all what I’ve been working on soon. You can see some of my projects at the APH Boutique. The Father is blessing my business there!
Oh don’t forget the Jane Austen Tour 2010 at Feelin’ Feminine!
Pura vida!

Wow girl, you’ve been busy! I love the new blogs you’ve designed at APH Boutique! (Especially the Second Gen Homeschooling one!)
Ugh, that travel sounds awful. I hate traveling too… like seeing new places, but getting there is a bear! So glad you all got a washer! What a help that must be!
Blessings,
Kate

Aw, love you- you are strong, girl! LOVE the new designs on APH Boutique- you’ve done a great job. Told hubby about the Nicaragua trip- asked him if he could imagine doing it and he said- “Not in a million years”– Your family is such an inspiration to us to do YHVH’s will, no matter what. Shalom.

HalleluYah for the washer!! So glad you guys have that to make your days easier. Now if you could just get a stove, it would be perfect!
I am so impressed with your work ethic, and the fact that you want to give all credit where it is due, to Yah. Too many, both young and old, want it to be all about them. Well done to you and your parents!

hello from Alaska. i get motion sickness when I ride a bus too. Have you tried dramamine? ( not sure how to spell it). There is now a non-drowsy version. I think you are very brave to take the bus with motion-sickness. I am very glad i found your blog.

Yeah… that trip… oh… I never want to do it again either! I think we must devise something besides turkey sandwiches for the next time. at least we had fresh fruit! :)

Oh, sister! I chuckle because I know exactly what you’re saying! I SOOOO appreciate my washer (even though it really doesn’t work very well) when I have to go a few days washing by plunger (I think that’s cultural, cause we do it here, too!).
I also can relate to the car-sickness. I think the problem is in the constant pitching and bumping — aggravated by the fact that the bus drivers only have two speeds: gung-ho and slam on the brakes. lol
Hey! I’m trying to get a new “thingy” started up on our family blog (I think you’d call it a meme, but I really don’t know! lol). I was thinking specifically of younger/homeschooling bloggers when I thought it up. Would you mind checking it out and possibly passing the word along? Thanks!!! http://thecoultfamily.blogspot.com/2010/07/fun-fact-friday-cookies.html
Praying for your family!!!

Hi Jocelyn,
I am so glad to get to know you! My family and I were living in Cosat Rica until just recently and are good friends of the Hemmingways. I am sorry that we didn’t actually get to meet before we left, but hope to when we return for a visit later this year. I would love to chat with you and your family and tell you some stories about our experiences in CR. Please feel free to e-mail me at elle.mental@yahoo.com the blog I wrote down is an art blog, my homesteading blog is still in the works but I will give you the addy when it is finished. It is nice to see a young woman who values home and hearth, I hope you continue to grow in Yah and find that things get easier in CR the longer you are there. Even the trips to Nicaragua will improve with experience…although it is better when you go as a group, the more the merrier and there is safety in numbers! Drop me a line if you get the chance, I would like to get to know you better.

If you get sick when travelling the best thing I have used are sea bands. They are a type of elastic band which you wear on your wrist. On the inside of each band there is a blimp of plastic which controls your pulse rate. It has worked in our family for years. There are adult size and children size.
This means you do not have to take any medicines which may have side affects. It is said to work for morning sickness too, although This is something I have not tried.
Great news about the washing machine and, yes, the washing does sometimes take two or three days to get dry. I never use a drier here in Spain. It is far too expensive.
Bendiciones.

Ha, well you already got two suggestions for motion sickness, but I will add one more and you can take it for what it’s worth: Ginger. I buy liquid ginger drops here in the states, but as they may be hard to find where you’re at, I would suggest just fresh ginger, which I’m guessing would be pretty easy to find. Make a thermos of ginger tea, drink some before the trip and sip it along the way. Or just tough it up, swallow a little (a little – you know its potent!) with maybe some honey? Cheap, easy, effective.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We do know about ginger, but we couldn’t find any here. :( We used honey and cinnamon, but everyone still got sick.

Miss Jocelyn,
In Tilaran, on the same street as the school (right off the square) is a hardware store called Commercial San Antonio, (I give you this so you can have a landmark to ask for directions….), right next to the hardware store is a nice little produce market that almost always has fresh ginger. It grow beautifully in C.R so buy some very plump pieces with good tips and plant some at your house. Soon you will have your very own supply of ginger for use fresh or to preserve for travel. Until then they can supply you on most occasions. These people are very nice and in my oppinion have the best produce in town. Also activated charcoal will help with upset tummies, but you will need a POBox (can be procured cheaply in Tilaran, just ask Joel Sanchez where to get one), and order it from the States (or have next person coming back from the states bring you some. I hope this helps.
