Carnival of Homeschooling #119 “Workout” Edition

Welcome to this week’s Carnival of Homeschooling #119. After much thought on what theme I’d do the carnival this week I came up with the “Workout” Edition. Yes, we’re gonna get quite a workout today… ok just stretching and maybe a little jogging but it’ll be good for you.

Homeschooling is a journey, but what that is in detail is all up to you. You can think of the journey of homeschooling is a lot of different ways, but I am going to pose it today as a workout. When we start homeschooling, old or younger kids, we have to work at it and get firmed up… in our schedules, method, and goals. We have to continue to follow them or we won’t achieve the “into shape” goal and we’ll get out of shape. We have to daily workout and do what is necessary for the household to run smoothly. I hope you will find some great resources in today’s Carnival and take a hike or a jog or even a walk to each one and explore!

It’s been so nice and warm (at least here) and going outside to run around has been a little tempting. I’m not the only one who thinks so…

At Ragamuffin Studies, Elisheva is taking a hike outside to see the new Road Construction. She’s not missing a beat, and posted some really cool photos and information about the trench that’s being dug for the new road. “Who knew that (un)school could be this fun?”

Celeste at The Life Without School is realizing that “To everything, there is a season, even for homeschool extracurriculars,” and she is getting to move -Move On that is to the next homeschool activities with her kids.

Alvaro Fernandez at Sharp Brains presents Social Connections for Cognitive Fitness explaining that “We human beings are social animals. It seems intuitive (even for introverts!) that social contact has benefits” and we all need to stretch out for social connections.

Heather Johnson at HE&OS shares 5 Ways to Fit in With Your New Homeschooling Group and no, it’s not a hard workout, only some minor stretching….

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h56/Jocelyndixon/COH5.png When you’ve Eaten Just Enough you should just ease away from the dinner table and stretch out a bit. The therapydoc at Everyone Needs Therapy has learned a valuable lesson from some of his fish.

Sisterlisa at The HomeSpun Life is just new to homeschooling and already she is experiencing the room she has to move around with her children and their work. No more worries about getting up and at ‘em, they’re already Self Motivated.

Writer2B is “weighing of pros and cons as I consider whether to enroll my daughters (7 and 4) in a program for classical homeschoolers” in Puffing up vs. building up at Findings.

The Reluctant Homeschooler is doing some heavy lifting – I mean – reading… now… since she’s started homeschooling and she does it, quite often, “In my spare time“.

Tiffany Holley at Life on the Road presents an A&Q on the Your Child’s Strengths book by Jenifer Fox. A book that addresses many of the issues that many have been frustrated with in the school system (some of the reasons we homeschool) because sometimes people just wanna lift and move according to their strengths! Hey did I mention you could win a copy of this book? Take a jog over there and check it out!

Ah, Renae at Life Nurturing Education can only run so far, especially because Bad Homeschool Days are like Giving Birth, but luckily “Once you behold the result of the effort, the pain fades”!

Now, in, out, in out, we’re going to check out the Geography and Science combined unit shared by Kerry at A Ten O’Clock Scholar. “Using an Usborne book as our text we will spend 7 weeks exploring ecosystems and the places they occur in the world.”

Melitsa presents How easy is it to just let them play? at Play-Activities.com where she explains about training your children to be able to be flexible and conform to any sort of amusement, by themselves or with others or you – without all the expensive toys.http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h56/Jocelyndixon/26371580thm.jpg

Amanda is getting LOTS of exercise because she’s just all over… Oh! The Many Places You Find A Homeschool Girl. “Being homeschooled has really opened many doors for me in my learning. I know that if I had been public schooled, I would not have the love of writing that I do now.”

Jessica Jones at Practical Nourishment wants to stretch and get to know her neighbors to create a Healthy Family, Healthy Community, because blogging just might not cut it (especially since her daughter might think she’s just staring at the computer!!).

Stretching my brain to put a description of Mama Squirrel’s article, The Vegetarian, gluten-free, sugar-free homeschool curriculum fair, at Dewey’s Treehouse because she did such an excellent job on it.

I’ve been seeing a lot of people stretching out (and pulling stuff) out for spring-cleaning. Time to get rid of everything we don’t need and toss it. Ah, it feels good to move around and clear things out!Janine over at WhyHomeschool shares about the workout John Strossel gave America in response to the California court ruling which attempted to outlaw homeschooling in defending homeschooling.

Jacque at Seeking Rest in the Ancient Paths is only running a little jog on “Why Would I Homeschool?” topic and exposing some of the ridiculous opinions of homeschooling.

Rebecca at The Upside Down World is working hard to Raise Christian Evolutionists. “I look at how you can teach your children scientific evolution while preserving and building their Christian faith.”

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h56/Jocelyndixon/26371587thm.jpgGrace at Sing Me To Heaven shares her thoughts on What Homeschooling Is About. From the thoughts of a 15yo young lady who is not stretching the truth about why family is so important in the lives of Christian homeschoolers.

They Had It AllPerhaps some are stretching too much in areas where they shouldn’t be. “Many homeschooling moms are also working moms. Here are some tips from older women who “had it all” (marriage, motherhood and a successful career) about what our priorities should be.” posted by Barbara Frank.

At Principled Discovery, Dana is getting some workout as she Shows and Tells. Life as a homeschooling mom, trying to get the school done when the kids aren’t exactly fascinated with “sandhill cranes’ staged migration”, but the highway bridge. Just bend over and take a breather, Dana. Get some water. “Breathe, that’s the key”.

ChristineMM at The Thinking Mother shares about autism in Being An Unperson. She listened to a conference and how people with autism conmmunicate and hopes it’s not too big of a stretch for her nephew to one day conmminucate with her and others around him.

Katherine at No Fighting, No Biting is really getting into this working in “My idea of roughing it…” when she realizes “I’m content to teach my kids history and geography from home listening to other homeschool moms describe homeschooling in RVs and campers”.

Oh boy, do I agree with this statement “For many students, mathematics is their achilles heel”. I’m not exactly a math-wiz so getting my algebra done can be a big stretch. However, David Cassell presents Getting Help With Mathematics posted at selectcoursesblog.com where he includes some great info and links on math-help.

Aurora Lipper at Supercharged Science Blog shares some Laser Experiments You Can Do With Your Kids. No need to stretch for anything here… Aurora has all the info!

Kim at Kim’s Play Place isn’t exactly making you do flips or summer-sults. At least not pyshically, but perhaps mentally in Homeschooling Philosophy as she ponders what is your goal, not necessarily your method.

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h56/Jocelyndixon/32229398thm.jpgRose at Learning at Home was asked “what’s your secret” in regards to her homeschooling sucess, and the answer is? Well, it’s not that far-STRETCHed in Learning at Home : Appeal Democrat.

Tiffany at Natural Family Living Guide is doing it two at a time (and no not 1 and 2)…. She’s doing it together, well, opening both eyes that is in Thoughts on Public Education. Shew, has she got some good eye-opening thoughts …. “Why public school doesn’t work for many students and how homeschooling can address what is lacking.”

Requirements requirements…. ah so much work, and all we want is educated kids. Activities Coordinator at Life On The Planet poses the question, Should Internet Safety Be Taught In Schools?

Timothy Power at Sometimes I’m Actually Coherent shares Our Lesson Plan, and just reading it makes me tired! They’re feeling pretty confident about this plan… “That is, so long as our illustrious state courts don’t decide that we non-credentialed parents aren’t qualified to do any of the above…”. They’ll not only give you a stretch, but a run for your money!

And we interrupt your workout session to bring you thess news announcements: Beverly’s Homeschooling Blog on Discovery Girls Magazine featuring homeschooled girls. “Homeschooling community, your daughters are invited to be a Discovery Girl star! Discovery Girls Magazine is reaching out to the homeschooling community to find tween homeschooled girls to profile in their magazine.”

Shauna at Treasure Seekers is stretching just far enough to hang some info about May Day Baskets on the door as is – excuse me – was tradition. Something fun to do with your kids when the flowers start to bloom.

Some things to ponder after so much stretching in Lessons Learned This Week as explained by Cristina at Home Spun Juggling. “Sometimes I feel like I’m the one who is homeschooled”
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h56/Jocelyndixon/COh4.jpgTake a breather and visit :: Suzanne :: as she shares how homeschooling has enabled one little boy to unwind in twas a great party posted at :: Adventures in Daily Living ::.

While we’re taking our break, here’s some amusement: Kids can say the cutest things. Jennifer in OR presents Five Year Old’s Solution to Hell posted at Diary of 1.

At Ship Full O’ Pirates Jenny’s son couldn’t stretch far enough to reach this or that, but the pencil shaper… not that far away, except that his momma is the best Pencil Sharpening Pro.

Denise at Let’s play math! shares about her daughter’s new tricks on how do to Backwards math.Stretching forwards to go backwards. It’s not that confusing… anymore.

Alright, let’s get back going… Looking to college, but not sure it’s affordable? Don’t sweat it. Susan Jacobs at College Parents shares 5 Tips for Making College Affordable.

Keep it at a slow pace, because you only have to stretch as far as your mouse is away from your hand to check out the Cheapest Textbooks Online shared by Ted at CampusGrotto. Ted gives some great info on all the places you can get your textbooks!

Josh Lien at Spin Your Wheels is only sprinting for this one: FREE Rosetta Stone – Learn a Foreign Language. How can you pass something like that up?

Hey’ we’re almost done. Just use these free history resources inFrugal Homeschooler: History present by NerdMom at Nerd Family Things to look, explore, and use.

Erica is sharing Some Spring Homeschool Encouragement at The Sojourner. We’ve had quite a workout with all this stretching, bending, sprinting, and jogging. I think it’s time to just “relax and enjoy your kids. The time you have with them will pass all too quickly, they will be grown and on their own.”

I think I’ll join them in some relaxation. It was quite a workout in itself to put this carnival together. You’d think it be a piece of cake (haha, gre-aat healthy food!) but it does have some work to it.

We’ve been doing a lot of different workouts in our school and housework, and I am ready for a nap. What about you? Happy Homeschooling!

If there are any dead or messed up links, please let me know. You are also welcome to grab the “workout” edition icon and put it on your blog for this week!

Next week the Nerd Family is hosting the 120th COH so be sure to submit something via the blogcarnival.

Oh hey! While you’re working out…. take a stroll over to Forward To The Past for this week’s 44th Homesteading Carnival. It’s a small carnival so you’re welcome to help with submission and submit something!

enjoyed? share!

Can you check for my post? Someone responded to my email and told me they’d recieved it (not sure if it was the Cates or you), but I don’t see it listed here.

    Here’s the link: http://theten0clockscholar.blogspot.com/2008/03/geography-and-science-combined-unit.html

Thanks! Let me know if you are able to get it added to this week’s carnival. If not I’ll submit it TODAY to next week’s. :) (But I’d prefer it go in to this week’s.)

  2. Wow, Jocelyn, the carnival looks amazing! What a lot of work you must have done to get everything up! I like the workout theme- very nice!
I noticed the link to my home page doesn’t work. It took me to homeschoolblogger.com when I clicked on it. I wonder if it was something wrong I did when registering; I told you I didn’t really know what I was doing!

Great job, Jocelyn. Apparently others think so, too, or you would not get so many submissions when it is your turn to host. Now, when am I going to find time to do this blogging workout?

    Dear Miss Jocelyn,

It was absolutely wonderful to finally meet you! I’m so glad that we got to meet IRL (hahaha), and I look forward to seeing you again! It was very hard to leave, but I agree it wasn’t as hard as it could have been since it won’t be long until our next visit. :D The scrapbook you made for your great grandma was neat to look at, you must have spent a lot of time on it, thank you for showing it to us.

    God Bless you!
