Oh Mr. Wickham!

Posted By Miss Jocelyn Tzahala on October 13, 2009 | Category: I Follow Yeshua HaMashyiach, Ponder Me This

I’ve been accused of being many things from a brainwashed, naive explicative by the feminists to “wolves in sheep’s clothing”, heretical, judaizer by the christians (ironically both sides believe I am leading ladies astray). I’m saddened, though not surprised, by how christians act and treat those they claim and accuse are heretics and false-teachers to get them in-line with the Scriptures. A little hypocritical to me, especially when they must announce another believer’s “heresy” publicly instead of following the command of “love covers a multitude of sins” – doesn’t matter if you don’t name them. If no one else ever knew you know, they know, and Yehovah knows.

I was talking with a friend this past week about Scripture versions. We both agreed some people feel very strongly about what version they use, no matter what. I’m not the type of person to act on impulses or believe something without deep research and study. I really enjoy using the Complete Jewish but if I were to find a better version or that it contained errors I would want to know and would search another version.  It confuses me why people are not willing to do this in every area, especially when there is info out there if they truly are seeking.

I did not know when I was suddenly given “A Pondering Heart” in my spirit how much it would truly reflect who I am in Yeshua ha Mashiyach. I am always seeking, always pondering, and always open to be challenged scripturally on what I believe so that I can bring my heart, mind, and soul in line with the Scriptures.

If you have read something on my blog or any of my [family] websites that you believe is scripturally incorrect or are confused as to what is believed please email me. I will be happy to discuss it with you and change my ways if proven in error by the Scriptures – in fact I would be most grateful. If you don’t need to email me please pray for spiritual protection for my family as we need it.

As Jane Bennett said, “Poor Mr Wickham! There is such an expression of goodness in his countenance.” and Elizabeth replied, ” Yes. I’m afraid one has all the goodness, and the other all the appearance of it!” I’ve been astounded at how Yehovah is watching out for us – friends are popping up all over and haven’t believed any such tales of woe from Mr. Wickham.

I would also always encourage you to always check what the exact Scriptures say as you read blogs and websites, including mine!

I am so sorry that you have to put up with such attitudes. So few people know how to debate their beliefs with tact and respect.

There are some things that Christians will disagree in. Some might be right, some might be wrong. Some have beliefs that are against the scriptures and some beliefs are a matter of personal conviction.

I hope you have a good Week!

I don’t get to visit your site often, but I enjoy it when I get here. So I don’t know what your post is in response to.

I weary of Christians that must argue about doctrine and translations. My response to disagreement is: as long as you believe on Jesus Christ the Messiah, His death, burial and resurrection, His sacrifice for the sins of “whosoever will” … the rest is, well … open for discussion, but not argument.

    Be blessed young lady!

I’m sorry you’ve had these difficulties. I believe it is right to approach a person privately first and that is what I would always do if I had concerns about you or anyone else. I have been on the receiving end of criticisms myself (in the comments of another person’s blog) so know what it is like when people choose another way.

I find mocking and scorn amongst the place where I live – and am often shunned even just for the way I dress! But I think of so many good Christians who have gone on inspite of the persecution ~ and it gives me hope and peace. I pray for peace for you ~ Have a wonderful day! Blessed are you when you are persecuted….

As Believer’s, we should expect opposition when doing the
work the Lord has placed upon us. REJOICE!!! I know this
is hard…. but, remember that since the world rejected HIM,
    we will be rejected also.

People are angry when scripture actually convicts them of
    what they are doing wrong…..

I am praying for you… and that you can learn to rejoice during
these times of persecution. ( I too am being persecuted by other’s
words… and these are people in my own family ).

In the last days…. in some household’s…. it is brother against brother….
a man’s own enemies are found in his home some times….. says the
    scriptures.

How strange, I was just going to email you about this very subject! I am so sorry that other believers have been so rude and tactless – I have had it myself lately, and we probably share a few people who have scorned us :( I think we disagree with each other on (probably) many small things, but the Apostles disagreed amongst themselves too – however, we agree about the most important things and that’s what counts! I have been a lot better lately about holding my tongue when I could argue with people and cause unnecessary strife (not with you in particular) amongst believers about not very important things.

Naturally, we should rebuke other believers in a loving manner when they are falling into serious errors but in a lot of cases arguments between members of the Body are fruitless and must put off a lot of unbelievers!

For the record, I think you are (as we say here in Britain) ace :D

You have weathered a lot this last year. Honestly it has encouraged me because I have also been challenged a lot this year for being too “legalistic” and too much a stick in the mud and “old fashioned”. The more we choose to leave the world behind, these things have increased to the point where some times when I am with my Christian friends I really feel like an outsider. You have a teachable heart and I think that is the most important thing. Some people believe strongly and will not listen to other perspectives from the Scripture. We should not waiver in our belief in Him, but I think we should have soft, teachable hearts so that the Holy Spirit can speak to us and direct us closer and closer to Him. Thanks for sharing.

I wish people would be more kind. What’s the greatest commandment, according to Christ? Love God and love people. That’s more important than beliefs, as important as studying is. A lot of people don’t want to be Christian because they believe Christians aren’t always loving. I wish there was a way to remind people that God wants us to love others because He loves us.

  23. Miss Jocelyn,

I’ve known many people who feel adamant about the version of Scripture they use. I’ve never been that way. In fact, I tend to read the NIV –gasp– I’ve had for years now. Is it the most literal? No. Is it the most insightful? Nah. Is it the most scholarly? Surely not! But it works for my needs and I haven’t felt a strong push to change.

Much of the Scripture I’ve memorized is in NKJV. I’ve listened to the Bible on CD that was some obscure translation (I don’t even recall which). My pastor tends to read from NASB–which is what my wife reads. So I’m open to other translations, and I’m sometimes surprised by the new insight/fresh perspective another reading provides. There was one passage in the Message that breathed new life into verses I knew like the back of my hand. It was cool!

So why don’t I do more research and find “the right” or “best” version? Why do I not seek out the information available to those who “truly” seek?

Because thus far, I’ve read commentaries and articles, books and studies that say all sorts of contradictory things. In fact, with enough digging, you can find information that defames just about anything in Christian history. That’s not to say I don’t have opinions and I don’t keep my eyes and ears open. But from what I’ve seen thus far in my walk with Christ, God’s redemptive power and grace work through many things… including me [smile]. So I’m not too worried about reading different versions of Scripture that may not be the most accurately translated and contain biases. My own reading and research would produce just as many biases.

So I’m open to reading and hearing from many versions, and am grateful that God chooses to speak to us in ways that we can understand!

Just a few thoughts your post sparked in my mind. May you continue to be blessed and hold firm to where Christ is leading you, even if others speak ill of you or disagree. And may we all have the wisdom we need to follow as He leads.

    Miss Jocelyn,
I think it’s great that you encourage your readers to research and study Bible translations. I typically read out of a King James Bible. However, I am not a King James only guy…not because I feel that all English translations are the same (to the contrary I believe, based on the research that I have done on the subject, that a lot of modern English translations have butchered the word of the God) but because I believe that it is not the only English translation that is close to the original autographs. One of the most impressive Bibles that I have come across is “The Interlinear Bible” translated by Jay P. Green. It includes both the Old Testament in Hebrew and the New Testament in Greek. It has both a direct translation of the Hebrew and Greek and a literal translation, as well as Strong’s Concordance numbers. I would recommend it to anyone. I just wanted to point out that the Interlinear Bible, like the King James, uses the Received Text (Textus Receptus) for the New Testament.

Well, I have a name for you that I call you quite often! It’s the “Little Apologist!” I hope the word little doesn’t offend you as it isn’t meant to be condescending at all.

As to disagreements, i think it is important to choose our battles wisely. If it is of a great enough concern to us to go around talking about another in a negative manner and will potentially ruin their reputation, then we should instead, be willing to go to that person and try to work it out.

However, there just isn’t enough time to go around and take up a debate about everything we disagree with. This is where maturity and respect must come into play. I can respect another Christian’s viewpoint without agreeing with it and without going around slandering or gossiping about that person.

If I find a blog or website that I think is heretical, I will simply not go there anymore. We must choose wisely which hills we are willing to die on considering we only have one life!

    Love in Christ,

    Michelle

  28. I suppose some of the public criticism comes from the confusion of having a public blog…that anyone may read and be influenced by or annoyed by. And perhaps we must remember that those who do not know us simply do not know what the Lord has done in our lives or what our hearts reflect to Him–often see only a few snatches of our written words. Lauren and I ran into just a touch of public “correction” when we first launched out, and it greatly troubled Lauren (since it was on her posts, mostly). Whether I agree or not, your posts are always faithful to set me pondering–and isn’t that what we are to do as believers? Any time I’ve made an objection, you’ve answered with grace, clearly giving it thought. Your entire attitude is clearly that of someone seeking the Lord and seeking to learn His ways. Pursue Him and delight in your heavenly Lover. If we are pursuing the Lord He will either lead us out of legalism (for it only survives as a substitute for intimacy) or into more radical obedience (as an expression of our love for Him).

    Blessings,
