His Name /Forever/

Posted By Miss Jocelyn Tzahala on October 31, 2009 | Category: I Follow Yeshua HaMashyiach, Saturday Psalm & Praise, The Scriptures

No one knew God’s name until he revealed it to Moshe at the burning bush when he said “Yud-Heh-Vav-Heh, the God of your fathers, the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya’akov, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered generation after generation.” (Exodus 3:15-16)

I have come to find the great importance and special blessings of Yahweh’s name within the past few months. Of course he has many names like Yahweh Yireh (Provider), El-Shaddai (God Almighty), Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh (I am/will be what I am/will be), and Yahweh-Tzva’ot (of Hosts), but are still attributes, like Alexander the Conqueror. THE name of God is Yahweh and is the same in all languages as is Yahushua’s. It’s not Qeo`s in Greek and Jehovah is English. It remains the same in every language just as your name does. Remember his words “This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered“.

The more you study the Scriptures the more doors open and the more you learn the more Yahweh reveals himself to you. We are told numerous times just throughout the Psalms to be praising his name, “Sing to God, sing praises to his name; extol him who rides on the clouds by his name, Yah; and be glad in his presence.” (Psalms 68:4)

Unfortunately most versions do not give Yahweh’s name, only the title of “The LORD”. In doing this they have not only removed words from the words written in the Scriptures, warned against in Deuteronomy and Revelation, but they have blocked the path for followers of the one true God to truly sing praises to his name. For how can we do so if we don’t know what it is?

The Prophet Jeremiah prophesied this would come to pass, saying, “With their dreams that they keep telling each other, they hope to cause my people to forget my name; just as their ancestors forgot my name when they worshiped Ba’al.” (Jeremiah 23:27)

I was editing an article yesterday and the writer had mentioned Yahweh several times, but nowhere in the text was his name actually written, only referencing him as Lord or God. I was sad because she did not have the pleasure and knowledge of speaking his name, but also because this is the norm. We have forgotten his name.

Using titles such as “Lord”, “Adonai”, “God”, and the “Name” is actually a Pharisaical, fence-line law which was begun as tradition in the temple as not to blaspheme Yahweh’s name, but sometime afterward it was extended to everywhere.  This is the Pharisaical law that Yahushua was constantly preaching against to the Torah-teachers. The Pharisees created such laws to prevent Israel from breaking the commands but in doing so they enslaved the people in legalism.

Unknowingly we still adhere to this tradition by using the titles instead of the name. When we set up fence-lines we are setting ourselves up for ruin because we are creating our own boundaries instead of just trying to follow the Scriptures. The Scriptures say call on his name, Yahweh, praise his name, Yahweh, and to love the Lord your God, Yahweh . The Son reflect the Father in every aspect, even his name, Yahushua, which means “Yahweh Saves”, and just by looking at what Yahushua said and did we can know how we are to praise the Father.

Joel 2:32
At that time, whoever calls on the name of Yahweh will be saved. For in Mount Tziyon and Yerushalayim there will be those who escape, as Yah has promised; among the survivors will be those whom Yah has called.

Psalms 116: 13
I will raise the cup of salvation and call on the name of YAH.

Romans 10:13
since everyone who calls on the name of Yahweh will be delivered.

Acts 4:12
This Yeshua is the stone rejected by you builders which has become the cornerstone. 12 There is salvation in no one else! For there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by whom we must be saved!”

Not all things are known to us but the things he wills us to know can be found in his Scriptures. All we have to do is look far enough and hard enough to find what he has in store for us. FSaturday Psalm & Praiseor who seek will find. Those who knock will be answered. I am so blessed and thankful for the opportunity to know his name and to praise it. Each day I am again in awe of the blessings and promises he has given to me! Let us praise his name be forever and let his salvation, his Son Yahushua, ever be on our lips!

Celebrate the Lord’s Day today by posting a song or psalm, and do the Saturday Psalm & Praise meme. Leave me the link when you’re done so I can visit!

Shabbat Shalom!

What a great explanation of His name. I am so thankful Yahweh brought me to your family so that I could know the truth. Otherwise I would still be referring to YHVH as “Lord” or “God.” Although I will admit that sometimes I forget (especially when praying!), but I have to get used to it!

Thank you so much for this! I do still often call Yehovah ‘Lord’, especially when praying, but that for me is simply a way of acknowledging His Lordship over my life and stops my prayers from becoming a ’shopping list’! I know His true name, which makes all the difference.

    Anyway, great post! <3

It’s definitely a habit to form but yes, Jade, he is our Lord and I don’t think there is anything wrong with acknowledging him as so. We are just not to forget or forgo using the name he gave us.

This is the first time I’ve heard this issue addressed, so it’s hard for me to understand. My name is Leanna, but I am also called daughter, sister, and friend, etc. Yes, we often use His attributes for titles (i.e. Lord, Father) but that doesn’t mean we have forgotten His actual name. To me that’s not what Jeremiah was talking about. I think he was using the phrase “forget my name” as a way to describe how the Israelites had turned their backs on Him and forgotten Him, not forgotten His verbal name. I’m certainly not saying we *shouldn’t* call Him Yehovah, but I’m not 100% sure that that’s the only name we should use. But like I said, this topic is very new to me.

I know you said you’re new to this, but I was wondering if you had any Scriptural basis for your comment?

Yes, you are called sister, but if a sister [in the Messiah] was writing a blog post and mentioned you but only called sister, how would people know who she is talking about? We have blood-related sisters and spirituals sisters – in other words a lot. She would have to use your name to identify you.

Besides the fact we are told to sing praises to him name there are many gods and we need to identify with the One True God by the name he gave us.

I have been to many churches of different denominations, and using his name was not something commonly done, not unless maybe it was in a worship song. Believers do not use his name on a regular basis and they do often just refer to him as God or Lord. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen believers use his name on their blogs in the last 3years I’ve been blogging unless they were Israelites.

The entire chapter of Jeremiah I quoted Jeremiah is speaking to those who have turned to ungodliness and forsaken Yahweh. Yes, they had forgotten him. They had the worship of Ba’al on their lips, instead of his name.

Again, I would love some Scripture for your comments about using his name so I can research it to make sure I’m not missing anything important.

    Leanna's Reply:

My Scriptural basis for believing that is what Jeremiah meant is from a few chapters earlier, in Jer. 16:10-12: “And it shall be, when you show this people all these words, and they say to you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this great disaster against us? Or what is our iniquity? Or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?’ then you shall say to them, ‘Because your fathers have forsaken Me,’ says the LORD; ‘they have walked after other gods and have served them and worshiped them, and have forsaken Me and not kept My law. And you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, each one follows the dictates of his own evil heart, so that no one listens to Me.’ “

I was more meaning about you weren’t sure it was the only name we are to call him. Like it’s alright to continue to reference him just as Lord or God – That’s what I meant for Scripture. I agreed with you on Jeremiah. lol :)

  6. Sylvia says:

I was under the impression that the Jews didn’t (verbally) use the Tetragrammaton. I think when they read YHWH they say “Adonai” (Lord).

Also, would it be properly pronounced with a w sound, not a v?

No, you’re correct. They say Adonai instead of his actual name – tradition. :)

    I believe it’s a v.

This morning I read in the Psalms”let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee”. Your lovely posting fits in well with this. Thank you ever so much for sharing about this. Great importance and special blessings to be sure! I am excited to learn more and I thank you for directing attention to His Name/Forever. Also, Deut:13:1-5 sheds light on the Jer23:27 passage. Rejoicing in Yahweh, sandra

I am a little confused on something, dear … are you saying that if we do not refer to our LORD as Yehovah we are in sin? I’m not sure if that is what I was understanding or not …

No, that’s not what I was focusing on or saying – whether it is or not, I don’t know. Like I told Jade, I don’t think there is anything wrong with acknowledging him as Lord. I was just making the point of how important using his name really is and how we do not do it. We only call him Lord or God. I want to follow the Scriptures as best I can and if Yehovah says “here is my name, this is how I am to be remembered” and to “sing praises to his name” then I want to do so by speaking his actual name. :)

The reference to the fence-line law was that it is a sin to speak is name according to it when that is not what the Scriptures say.

  9. If we say Yahweh, there is no doubt of what god we are speaking. The One. :) Many years ago my father explained to me that when I see the LORD, it is God’s personal name–Yahweh. I always substitute it now when reading aloud, and sometimes others are surprised. :)

Very good Jocelyn! It’s not surprising to me for God to use young people to teach even us elder folks :)
My husband and I worked with youth for 7+ years and were always encouraging them to speak Truth, even despite their age and people believing they weren’t mature enough to know much. God uses those who are willing and He reaches those who’s hearts are open. Thank you :) I hope you don’t mind if I continue to glean from you, as I still know very little about the Jewish roots of my own faith (a little embarrassing, I admit.)

Good thoughts, and I’m glad for the clarifications in the comments. It definitely would take me a while to get used to using the Lord (Yahweh)’s name all the time, and I’m not sure it’s necessary (I’ve always thought like Leanna). But you’ve given me more to think about. I think His name should have been translated the way it really was in the Hebrew, too, but I’ve never not said it the way it was translated, though I knew it wasn’t the original.

  14. Leandro says:

That was an issue to me too. Then I asked some Messianic Jewish friends of mine to explain me the whys. I even had to take some Hebrew classes and get all the lexicons I had available.

I usually don’t touch that matter because I know people that are willing to lose the friendship if it’s necessary to be right about what’s the Messiah’s right spelling: “Yehoshua, Yahushua, Yaohushua, Yahoshua or Yeshua?” For some reasons I use Yeshua instead of the other ones, but in my own life experience, I’ve seen that discussion has a great potential to break relationships and to focus on what He is probably not working on a person’s life, even though it’s a good think to stand for. For instance, I’ve met a person that God had been working on his heart so much about deep things on the realm of identity, He was ministering to his heart in a meeting, then a well-meaning Christian came along in the coffee-break and told him: “when you pray you should say Yahweh instead of ‘You’ when referring to the Father.”. That closed his heart and he immediately left the meeting, and God lost the opportunity to minister on his heart just because that well-meaning Christian missed what He was actually working on that person’s lives that can be totally different of what we think He is doing. I like this quote: “You don’t need to be right to repent”, meaning that our mind deceives us and we end up being legalistic even though we didn’t desire that. Hope you got what I meant :)

But concerning God, we have an issue here in Portuguese because we say “Deus” (God), but the problem here is that “Deus” is a semi-pagan god originated from Zeus, as you know he is a roman god. So here we have the issue. I believe it’s a blessing to a believer to know God’s holy name, but that doesn’t have to be a stumble blocking to what He is working on people’s lives at that moment because people often close their hearts.
