mousse and hairspray – homemade style

I’ve been doing some research on hair and skin care products, and my findings haven’t been pretty. For most products they scored a 6-8 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most hazardous. I’ve been looking for a more natural approach to this area since for the past few months I’ve been having some skin problems. I’ve forgone wearing any cosmetics for the past week or so and my skin appears to be clearly up, and while I still have blemishes I have noticed that their occurrence is decreasing. I’ve been letting my hair go a little wild these past few days too because I wanted to stay away from what we had, and see if there were any natural ways to mimic hairspray and mousse. There is usually a natural solution to everything, even if sometimes it’s cutting out the process completely. I was happy to find several sites and info on how to create your own hairspray with just a few, everyday household items.

The mousse was super easy. You just need two egg whites (you can use the yokes for washing). You put the egg whites into your mixer and whip until mousse-y. I loved watching progress from liquid to having white, fluffy homemade mousse that was guarantied to be safe within minutes. This will keep for a week or two, but must be refrigerated. I waited too long to use it so  it became watery, so I just turned the mixer back on for a few minutes and it whipped back up. There is no smell to it at all, which surprised me. It must be the yoke that makes the eggy smell.

While the mousse was whipping I made the hairspray. You will need a small saucepan, two cups of water, and a whole lemon or lime or orange. I have not done research on anything else, but I assume there is more you can use then just these. I know you can make a sugar or oil mixture as well. I decided just to stick with the easy stuff. I wasn’t sure how well sugar or oil would be with my hair either. So, just cut up the fruit (entire thing – rind n’ all) into chucks and put into the pan, then added the water. It’s probably a good idea to squeeze the fruit a bit before you add the water. Cover and let it simmer until the rinds are soft. Let the mixture cool, strain, and put into a empty hairspray bottle. Then you’re good to go. This is stored and will keep the same as the mousse.

I also thought the hairspray would have a strong citrus smell, but it doesn’t. In fact my hair doesn’t smell like anything and you can’t tell I did anything different, except I think it looks fuller and I know it’s healthier!

Update: Since posting this I have not switched back to using commercial products. In fact I hate it when we don’t have eggs and I have to use something else. The egg mouse and wash has worked so well for me and I am so much happier with the way my hair looks when I use it.

Awesome! Thanks, I will have to try this. :D I am a huge hairspray fanatic,…I over use it. How well does this mixture hold?

I would recommend for a real strong, ‘crunchy’ hold you look into using sugar or up the fruit portion. My hair isn’t super crunchy but it is stiff enough.

Wow! What a great idea :)

I would have never thought to make my own mousse. However, I’ve stopped using hair products for a while now except for coconut oil treatments every now and then. Do you find that the egg whites leave your hair stiff? Or do they leave it soft?

Thanks for such a great post!

    Miss Jocelyn's Reply:

I would say depends on how much you put in. I think if you just run it through your hair and don’t add anything else it will probably be smooth. Let us know though if you try it!

  12. Kaitlyn has been using coconut oil instead of the silk protein we used to buy to keep down her fly-away hair. It really works. She tends to break out on her forehead if she uses hairspray. We’ll have to try this! I love it!

Hmm, I would be skeptical of using egg whites in my hair…but being the cake decorator/baker that I am, that’s just too weird for me I guess, it would almost be like putting my frosting on my head! Lol! ;) But if it works, then hey, use it! :D Does the hairspray really work? I can’t imagine that the citrus fruit and water would hold anything…

It’s nice that you are trying more natural things for your body though. I think that’s great! I am blessed to not have to use any products or anything like that on my hair or skin. I do use shampoo and conditioner though, so if you find any of those, I might be interested in trying them (if it wouldn’t cost to much for ingredients). :)

    Blessings!

  15. Tessa says:

Great idea to post about this! I have looked into this before……..and I found about the same things you did when it came to hairspray–and, well…….I thought that using fruit would be very *sticky*. It was nice to hear from someone who actually tried it!! The mousse sounds great…….and I can’t believe it has NO smell! I very much dislike the smell of egg…..it’s probably one of the yuckiest smells ever. :) Hm! I’ll have to try this sometime soon!

I know what you mean about cosmetics and hairspray making your skin break out. It is no fun at all! I don’t wear makeup….but when I do wear powder, it always seems to make my skin irritated. I’ve noticed that when I drink Coke it makes me break out….or if I am eating a lot of “junk” food. Alas, the joys of trying to keep skin clear! Tis hard!

I also have a hard time with soap…..ANY kind I use makes me break out. Moisturizers do NOT work for me–it does the same things as the soap. I’ve found that using a homemade basil toner keeps the acne away and also is very wonderful for my skin. :)

This is something I love to talk about……..it’s so much fun to find new homemade recipes!

    Blessings! ~Tessa

Wow, what an interesting post! The hairspray sounds great, I must try that sometime :)

For a free shine treatment, after washing my hair I rinse it in cold water – it makes the hair cuticle lie flat which makes your hair shinier! Also, if you have dark hair like me, soak some rosemary (dried or fresh) in lukewarm water for 10 minutes or more if you have time, before straining and using it as a hair rinse after washing. This is how girls in Greece get their dark hair looking so good!

Thanks for posting this! I’ve been trying the ‘curly girl’ method on my long hair, but was having trouble keeping the hair on top near my head from frizzing up. Perhaps the mousse would help with that. And we have plenty of eggs at our house!

    Greetings,
Thanks for sharing your recipes…I have heard of doing this before…
I myself don’t use mouse or hairspray, but I shall pass the info along to a few people that I who do use it. :)
I make a lot of “mint water” or “herb water” and use that for a quick spray on my hair to make it stay in braids and updos better. Plus it smells really good too.
    Have a lovely day…

    sincerely,
    Brielle

Oh, cool! I’ve been making my own hairspray almost the exact same way (1 lemon, 2 cups water) but I boil mine until there is only 1 cup of liquid left. It makes the spray way stronger but not sticky and it combs right out. :) I didn’t know about the mousse one though, that’s interesting. :)
