Heart Of Wisdom Teaching Approach
Posted By Miss Jocelyn Tzahala on January 13, 2009 | Category: Homeschooling, The Scriptures, Winter Bundle
Mother bought the HOWTA book several years ago and loved how Mrs. Robin Sampson designed this unit study. We have many of Mrs. Sampson’s books and have enjoyed getting to use them in our school. It’s not only a curriculum but a resource as well. She uses the Charlotte Mason method in her own way with her own Bible-first philosophy.
The Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach is for all homeschoolers that want to make the Bible the center of their school day. This giant provides you with the methods, program, and resources for a course of study where students spend half the school day studying God’s Word and the other half studying God’s world (academics). Students study history chronologically and science in the order of the days of creation. This book will encourage, motivate you and instruct you, step by step, how to give your child a Bible focused, comprehensive education from preschool through high school; one that will train him or her to read, to study, to understand, to love to learn and most importantly to desire and seek true wisdom. This approach can be used for all grade levels.
In this study she also uses these methods: Bible First Philosophy, A Return to Biblical Education, Charlotte Mason’s Philosophy, Learning Styles and 4Mat, Integrated Unit Study, Lifestyle of Learning, Delight-Directed Learning, Writing to Learn. No matter what kind of homeschool you are you’ll love this!
If you’d like to enter to win this ebook please leave a comment with what you like, so far, about it, and to find out how you could have more chances to win this item check out the Winter Bundle Announcement post.

I think I like the fact that you get more of God’s word in your study time. That is something I struggled with when I was in school and it would be great to use this for my “someday” children! Thank you!

[...] Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach [...]
Miss Jocelyn,
When I was growing up, my parents sent me to Catholic school. I know that at the time the idea was that I would get an outstanding education (I didn’t, actually), but a side effect that my father desired was that I would be brought up with the Catholic faith at the center of my schooling.
I won’t go into the reasons why I believe that the philosophy was faulty and resulted in my ultimately turning away from God for sixteen years, but I would like to state emphatically that my own educational past resulted in my desire to home school my own children and to do so in a way that is consistent with my Christian values. I want God at the center of the education that my children receive, because is there any greater gift that we can give our children other than Jesus? Ultimately I believe that without Christ at the center, the education our children receive can fall short. I would love to receive this wonderful prize!
I did post in my blog about this (the one on the index page) and also added your icon to the sidebar. For some reason the icon made the main window slide down though. I need to look into that, but everything is there!

Oh- this sounds wonderful. I love homeschooling. Each day I gather my little ones and teach them God’s word through catechism, songs, Bible reading, memorization, and finger plays. I would love to read a book that would help me be a better homeschooling mommy. Also, as a pastor’s wife, the other ladies are always asking me for reccomendations.

This curriculum looks a lot like what I am looking for as I prepare for when the Lord blesses me with children, or if I eve teach again. I specifically like how it is based on Charlotte Mason, with Bible first, which is about what I plan to do.

This is my first year homeschooling, and we choose a more “school-like” curriculum…and its not really working for us. I actually had did some research on HOWTA (when I was researching curriculum last summer) and liked what I read. The more I read on the website, the more convinced that it was something I wanted to try later on. Now that our first year is halfway over, I am looking to next year, and am looking at HOW again and how it can benefit our family :)

I appreciate Robin’s perspective on Hebrew method of education and the need for Christians to study our Hebrew roots. I also got a lot out of the sections on learning styles and putting unit studies together. I could really relate to her chapter on the entering the Promised Land.
It’s a one-stop book.

I’ve studied the Greek/gnostic/roman cultures in the past, and contrasted them with the Hebraic culture, and the integration (of families, tradition, lifestyle, education, spirituality, etc) seems to be how God orchestrated things. I like that HOW seems to address this and follow God’s framework, though I’ve only read the excerpt thus far.

I was fascinated by the excerpt. I would love to be able to read the whole book! Many of the secular influences – Greek – Roman I knew about. In this book they are put into perspective so that one is left with a clear realisation of where we have gone wrong. How we have been robbed of our Hebraic heritage! I am very sad about that for myself! Very definitely in education the thinking is Greco – Roman and to our detriment. The result is we have fallen for Humanism hook, line and sinker! Oh to get rid of that and to re-progamme our brains! Quite daunting to say the least! But what an opportunity for our children and grandchildren to learn God’s way and not our way! I would love to win the prize offered as living in South Africa – not earning in $ – the exchange rate is mind boggling. My grandson is a special needs child he suffers from glue ears and his expressive language development has been impaired. This type of teaching looks as if it could be the answer for him as he is a visual learner. As I am a remedial therapist much of this will fall on my shoulders. The whole programme devised by Robin is brilliant and shows a devotion to the Lord seldom seen.

What I like most about any of Robin Sampson’s books is that they lead you right back to the Bible as your primary source of knowledge. The HOWTA book is no different. It allows you, encourages you, to learn about the Hebraic roots of Christianity. I believe the methods used in HOWTA also lend themselves to the original way children learn more than the way most schools teach. It’s a great approach.

This sounds like what I have been looking for for all my homeschooling years!!
I tend to unit study with the kids. I also lean towards delight-directed (esp. in the younger years). I strive towards Bible centered learning as well.
I may have stumbled into just the thing to rejuvenate my homeschooling journey.

Sounds like my kind of approach :)! Bible-focused!

I have been homeschooling for ten years now, and always seem to gravitate toward teaching methods that I now know are Greco/Roman. I’ve had a vague sense that, even though Bible is included in our studies, that our focus is not on God. To love the Lord God with all our heart, mind (study as worship-incredible) , soul and body, and our neighbor as ourself should be our goal. The concept that we cannot truly understand this from our Greco/Roman/American point of view, and that we must study from a Hebrew perspective to truly understand scripture and apply it, is truly life altering for me. I want my children to learn these concepts now, not later. Truly exciting material Robin. I also have your book on Biblical Holidays and hope to begin that study with the assistance of a Messianic Jew who attends our church. Thank you for blessing us with all your work.

Any “curriculum” that puts the focus on God’s word first is something worth having in my library – definitely. I’m now working on getting a library of resources to pass on to my daughters to use to homeschool their children-this would be a great addition to that (after I read it myself of course!)

Hi there Miss Jocelyn! I would love the chance to have this book for my homeschool adventures!
I am entering a season of needing in a real way: “encourage, motivate you and instruct you, step by step” I think it’s the step by step that I would appreciate. I am a seasoned Home school Mama, yet there is this real thing called “burn out, tired, and a little anxious” if they are “getting” it.
So, yes, enter me please!
Thanks so much!
Shalom!!

I have this book as well as several other of Robin’s books and she is spot on!
I love HOW for it’s focus on Biblical truth….and how all the subjects grow FROM the Bible instead of cramming the bible into the other subjects
We are currently working on Year Two, starting The Early Church next week ;-) It’s hard to learn to “let go” and go with the delight directed learning and scheduling by faith…it’s so much easier to have a checklist….but Robin’s approach is wonderful and makes it easy to rely on GOD and the Bible, and not her words, or anyone else’s (not that Robin isn’t wise ;-) )
I love HOWTA….
