Desires Of Your Heart

Posted By Miss Jocelyn Tzahala on December 27, 2008 | Category: Saturday Psalm & Praise, The Scriptures

I’ve posted passages from this chapter in Psalms a few times. I think it really is comforting and promising on many accounts, but one that always sticks out for me is these three verses. In the previous verses it talks about your enemies and how the Lord will care for the, and is followed with these words.

Saturday Psalm & PraisePsalm 37:3-5

3Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

4Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

I’ve heard two interpretations of  “he shall give thee the desires of thine heart”, and both are valid. The first one I think our minds automatically come up with this being the selfish humans we are.

1.  If you delight yourself in the Lord that whatever you desire and pray for will be given to you. However, I know whenever Jesus prayed he prayed for the Father’s Will.

2. If you do delight yourself in the Lord and are completely open to His will he will put those desires in your heart. They won’t necessarily be “your desires” but because He put there they will. I think explained this way better falls in line with the verses like that in Proverbs 16:9, which says “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” and Jeremiah 1:5.

It’s all about how you view yourself, the Lord, and how you’ve been raised. I think to keep verses in context we really need to research the entire chapter and Bible. The Word of God is so complex, yet so simple. I think we just expect it to be complex that we often do miss the simple interpretation. I praise the Lord that no matter the correct meaning is that He will give me the desires of my heart as I delight myself in Him! Commit your ways to the Lord.

Shalom,

  1. Some of my favorite verses as well! So full of hope…
One of the biggest things that strikes me is the coupling of “trust” and “do”. After all, trust is a verb! God doesn’t intend for us to sit still and do nothing!

Thanks for the beautiful reminder of God’s beautiful promise!

    Amen, sister!

Our own personal interpretation of Scripture is worthless and I believe that by doing so, we’re adding to God’s Word, which is sinful because it’s against God (Revelation 22:18).

Here’s a quote by Leonardo da Vinci that I thought interesting because it’s so true!:

“The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions.”

As Christians, we’re to read all of God’s Word and see it all as His pure Word. When we don’t understand something, then we’re to ask for His wisdom (James 1:5). There are also some things though, that I do believe we’ll just never be able to comprehend in this earthly life. You’re absolutely correct that the Bible is so simple, but from what I’ve observed, man keeps making it so much more complicated than what it truly is (which is so very sad). Here we’re back to that quote again . . . When man’s opinion gets in the way, he only suffers because he’s not willing to look at the Truth.

Great post! It is something everyone should stop and think about. God wants to give us the desires of our heart, if we only ask Him.

I love Psalms. I find myself coming back to them again and again. It is the same with the book of Proverbs. :)

Hope you are having a super week! :)

Well said! Especially the last paragraph.

The more I study the Bible, the more I am compelled to study further. Sometimes, I find a verse, and then later, find another one that seems to complement the first one, or balance it out, so to speak.

This goes right back to what you said: “I think to keep verses in context we really need to research the entire chapter and Bible.” It’s so easy to isolate one verse and misinterpret it because you haven’t gained proper context by reading the chapter/book in its entirety.

Also, thanks for the links you left for me. I’ve started reading those archives already… they’re wonderful! I always love to read your perspectives on various subjects… especially (shhh….) the “S” word! (Giggles)

That is realy beautiful Jocelyn, it is amazing to think of also, that whan you are delighting in the Lord, then the desires of your heart will be difrent than what you first thought was important to you. Do you know what I mean? Or is it about as clear as mud??? ;)

I happen to agree with version two. The Lord may not give us all that we desire but He has often changed my desires to meet His wishes for my life. BTW I read your “your judgmental” post and I hardly agree! Your a very sweet woman and I believe that you are doing a wonderful work with your blog.

Welcome

Shalom, welcome to A Pondering Heart. I hope you will be challenged by what you read here and it will cause you to search deeper and deeper into the Word of YAH.
