Rosewater Spritzer

Posted By Miss Jocelyn Tzahala on December 11, 2008 | Category: Health & Fitness, Homesteading, Reviews

It’s very easy to drive down to your local convenient store and buy some face products, but a lot of times it’s not the safest for your skin. As a frugal homemaker and one who is striving for simplicity I always look into doing the “homemade old-fashioned” way before anything else.

I own a book that is all about being a homestead prairie girl, it’s called “The Prairie Girl’s Guide to Life: How to Sew a Sampler Quilt & 49 Other Pioneer Projects for the Modern Girl” by J Worrick. It’s in the fashion of Laura Ingalls Wilder. However, it is not by a Christian author, and while there is no cursing in there she does use slangs like “heck” and has a feminist world-view.  That’s the only thing I don’t like about it. It really is a wonderful guide, full of recipes and nifty ways to save money with little tidbits of info from the 1800s. One activity I found very interesting was one about making a rosewater spritzer. This mixture, which acts as a toner, is both refreshing and genteel. Not to mention is has just a few simply ingredients and supplies.

Supplies:

Glass mason jar
Glass or plastic spray bottle
2/3 cups of rosewater (you’ll need a handful of dried rose petals for this)
1/3 cup witch hazel
6 drops of rose essential oil

Directions:

Before you doing anything you’ll want to place a pot of water on the stove to boil. This will be used to sterilize your mason jar. When the water boils dip the jar into the water and then let it dry. Take a handful of your rose petals and put them into the mason jar and fill jar with boiling water and seal. Leave this sit for 24hours, and then strain all the petals from the water. This is your rosewater. Very easy and simple. When I was researching historical information for my novel I actually found similar recipes for ways to freshen up on the homestead when you really had to spend your money wisely and use what you had or could find in nature.

Doing just as you did to sterilize the mason jar do so with the spray bottle and make sure it’s completely dry before using it. You could actually use a recycled hairspray or body-mist bottle if it’s well cleaned out. After sterilizing the jar pour the witch-hazel and rosewater in and shake well. Next add the rose oil. You have your Rosewater Spritzer.

To apply the toner you simply hold the spray bottle about 6inches from your face and spritz lightly. Or you may spray a cotton-pad or whatever you wish to use. If you stick your spray into your refrigerator between uses it will keep it fresh and last longer. It’d be interesting to research and find out if there are different flowers or herbs to use in a spritzer. I wonder what health-benefits the rose has on your skin.

This Rosewater Spritzer would be an excellent gift for one of your dear friends. An idea would be to put the spritzer into a decorative or fancy bottle, glass perhaps. Make a little 3×3 card that had the ingredients and directions on it and tie it around the top of the bottle with some ribbon. Homemade gifts are always the sweetest and the best!

Blessings!

Lovely! So old fashioned and refreshing. At one time I had 50 rose bushes in my rose garden. But I was a lot younger then. I only have about 15 now.

Great idea Jocelyn! Up here in MI we don’t have roses now :-( because of all the snow, but I buy rosewater at the grocery store and use that in recipes. There is another book you may like, it is a natural spa book by Klutz publishers. It has hair, face, hand and foot masks and scrubs, all with natural ingredients like fruit and herbs. You might like it!

  8. Cool!! I have a bottle of rosewater that someone gave me this last year. I hardly ever use it, but this might just work. I agree that most of the facial creams that they sell in the stores are junk and shouldn’t be used for anything, let alone your face!!
I think I shall try this recipe, but I can’t promise that it shall be before Christmas, I’m swamped with engagements until after that!!
    Blessings!!
    Luv ya!!

  9. Thanks for visiting me (at home) and my blog, too! The reviews are fun to do, but it is difficult when you don’t like/won’t use a product. Spears Art is really great, though; you should check them out and give me your “professional” opinion ;-)

Great post! Kevin Trudeau says, “If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!” Recently, I got some deodorant from a health food store, and when I got home, I saw that there was propylene glycol in it! Bleh! I took it back…

Also, I replied to your comment. Thanks for stopping by!…

We also have the “Prairie Girl’s Guide to Life” and I love all the ideas in it (though I agree that I am not fond of the language she uses and some of her tips – someone should rewrite it from a Christian worldview!).
As for using natural face products, we use plain olive oil for our facial moisturizer. We use it plain but you could also add an essential oil if you wanted to fragrance it. You would think it would feel really gross and greasy but really I think it’s quite nice.

  16. Thanks for the kind words about my book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved writing it. I’m currently working on The Prairie Girl’s Guide to Gift-Giving for publication next fall. Please feel free to check out my website at jenniferworick.com and blog at jenniferworick.blogspot.com. And yes, I am a feminist and yes, I am a Christian!

Ooh, that sounds really lovely! And it has the nice touch of being handmade, rather than spending $3 or whatever on toner every month. I might have to track down that book – I love to do crafty fun things like that. I think it’s so neat to be able to use things you make yourself. :)

Thank you for your sweet comment on my birthday post! It was very encouraging. I just love you…
