My purpose is that they may be encouraged, that they may be joined together in love, and that they may have all the riches derived from being assured of understanding and fully knowing God's secret truth, which is - the Messiah! 3 It is in him that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. 4 I say this so that no one will fool you with plausible but specious arguments. 5 For although I am away from you physically, I am with you in spirit, rejoicing as I see the disciplined and resolute firmness of your trust in the Messiah. 6 Therefore, just as you received the Messiah Yeshua as Lord, keep living your life united with him. 7 Remain deeply rooted in him; continue being built up in him and confirmed in your trust, the way you were taught, so that you overflow in thanksgiving. 8 Watch out, so that no one will take you captive by means of philosophy and empty deceit, following human tradition which accords with the elemental spirits of the world but does not accord with the Messiah.

I don't know if this is recent or how recent it is if so. I do searching and studying all week, all the time and I can't think of a source to give you at the moment. I believe Nehemiah Gordon has spoken about this. Maybe if you search Hebrew idioms in the NT you might find something. :)

Jocelyn,

You said that:

"As for being faithful to the Greek there is has been a discovery with strong evidence [proving] that all four of the Gospels were originally written in Hebrew (from the idioms and other language barriers), and I don’t know but, Luke also wrote Acts so it may have also been originally written in Hebrew as well."

Is this a recent discovery? If so, I was wondering what the source of this information was. This is very interesting!

Have a Blessed New Year!

I think it's interesting that the Jews were keeping the Sabbath. They were following all of God's commands to the letter. BUT they were adding their own traditions to God's commands and made God's commandments a burden. This is what Christ was chastising them for.

I believe following God's commandments is easier than we make it out to be. I don't think God wants us to be burdened by stressing about sin and His commands. I love it that all of His commands are summoned up by "love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself."

I'm sorry Lauren I didn't mean to confuse you. Yes, you're right in the fact that "first day of the week" doesn't always mean Saturday night. I was meaning in Acts 20 when it reads "first day of the week". The text does read, in John 20, the women went early Sunday, when it was still dark, right after the Shabbat ended. I imagine they were pretty anxious to go to the tomb. By 9am it would have been the fifteenth-hour (what we would say is 3pm) and not "Early on the first day of the week..." It is accurate in Acts 20 to have the Mozta-ei Shabbat there in verse 7... Look at the original Greek. http://www.yahweh.com/booklets/Sabbath/Sabbath.htm (search page for Acts 20:7).

As for being faithful to the Greek there is has been a discovery with strong evidence [proving] that all four of the Gospels were originally written in Hebrew (from the idioms and other language barriers), and I don't know but, Luke also wrote Acts so it may have also been originally written in Hebrew as well.

Thanks, Jocelyn! Though I'm not sure I agree...

The "first day of the week" would indeed start on Saturday night, but that doesn't mean that everywhere that phrase is used, Saturday night is in mind. I believe a literal rendering of the Greek would be something like "the first [day] from the Sabbath" (in other words, not the Sabbath). You might want to look into that. As it is used in John 20, it appears that the disciples met later on the same day Jesus rose from the dead, and it is still called, "the first day of the week" (both when the women went to the tomb, and when the disciples gathered many hours later). Thus, I don't think it is faithful to the Greek to say "Motza'ei Shabbat" in Acts 20 (or any other passage where that phrase occurs). That would be an assumption, an interpretation, but not necessarily accurate.

When the text reads "the first day of the week" it means "the first day of the week", however that may be anywhere from late Saturday evening to early Sunday evening.

Yes, Lauren, that's right. Friday sundown begins the Shabbat (Saturday), and then until Saturday night (around 4-6pm) it ends and begins Sunday. Motza'ei Shabbat means "going out of the Sabbath". When the text reads "the first day of the week" it means Saturday night.

Isn't the Sabbath observed from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday? That is my understanding of it. What does Motza'ei-Shabbat mean in English? (Understanding Shabbat=Sabbath)

If one were to look in an encyclopedia, one would find that the coming "holiday" is pagan in origin. If we also look at the way of life of the Pilgrims and Puritans, they had nothing to do with this day.

Jocelyn, I am delighted to hear you did some sort of observation of Channukah this year.

Thank you Kate - you're very sweet. Unfortunately these customs and traditions have just been ingrained in our culture and way of life and so we don't think that there would be anything wrong with them (our ancestors have been doing them for years!) and we are told over and over that there isn't, but we have bring everything back to the Scriptures and if they violate or don't line up with them we must abandon them, no matter the cost. I would encourage you to do some research, with your family, and ask Yahveh to lead and guide you and to reveal his purpose and plan for his people.

As having done lots of research myself - if you want to email me about anything (or links) you're most welcome to. :)

Hi Jocelyn,
Thanks for posting this. I've never questioned the validity of the holidays I celebrate before, but I intend to research it more carefully now. I don't know what the outcome of my research will be, but whether I end up agreeing or disagreeing with what you've written here, I applaud you for speaking boldly and uncompromisingly on this issue!
Blessings,
Kate

*Sigh* Psalms 119:118 does ring true as do so many other passages in the Scriptures. I didn't quote that just because the traditions are pagan in holidays, but even the christian-meaning of them are also false as you pointed out loverly in your recent post "HE is the reason for EVERY one of Yahweh's holy days". Yahushua is the reasons for Yahveh's holy-days, not christian-ones.

Yahushua is the reasons for Yahveh’s holy-days, not christian-ones.

"There is no portion of the commandments of Yahweh in general or of the Torah in particular, that is not based on a scientific understanding of fundanmental law. The laws of God are enforced and are as sure as the law of gravity. All of Yahweh's Laws are like his law of gravity - they /can't/ be changed."

No, actually Saturday Shabbat wasn't changed to Sunday for about 300 years later when you were persecuted if you identified in any way with anything "Jewish" when the 'church' was established. Robin Sampson wrote a bit about why it was changed here http://heartofwisdom.com/biblicalholidays/?p=87

Acts 20:7 - On Motza'ei-Shabbat, when we were gathered to break bread, Sha'ul addressed them. Since he was going to leave the next day, he kept talking until midnight.

This Motza-ei Shabbat is the end of Shabbat, on Saturday night, in which they do a special meal to officially end the Day of Rest. They would have been eating and observing Shabbat until 6-8pm on from "late Saturday night" to Sunday "morning". We don't realize that "the first day of the week" early Sunday in the Scriptures is actually our Saturday night since Yahweh's days go from evening to morning, not the other way around.

Jocelyn,

Hello. I'm always encouraged by your posts, and clearly respect what you write. However, some of what you have said does not sit right with me. Let me ask you a question,

You said "He wants his people to worship in him the way and on the days he set apart and appointed."

God said the Sabbath was to be observed on the 7th day, yet according to the book of Acts, the disciples met on the first day of the week to worship. According to what you said, they should not have b/c it was not written.

We did celebrate Hannukkah a little this year.... not like it's done traditionally though. We were too busy.
However, I did find out that lighting a candle each night is from pagan origins (for same reasons christmas/yuletide is). Other than that Hannkkuah has no pagan origins and is not in honour of any man, but Yahweh-Elohim. It is the event where Yah's people were given the victory and rededicated his temple to him. Hannkkuah actually is in the Scriptures, though not commanded. We know Yahushua [Jesus] celebrated in {John 8-12}, and we are told to follow his example. Hannukkah, the telling of the event of the Abomination of Desolation, is also a foreshadow of what is told will happen [again] in the end days in Daniel and Revelation.

Correction: Not Jewish holy-days. They are Yah's [Scriptural] feasts and appointed times. He gave them to anyone called by his name. Me!!!! Me!!! Oh, this included the Egyptians [ie: not Jews] that had left Egypt with the Hebrews too.

So do you celebrate Hanukkah? Just curious as I didn't think there was anything especially Biblical about it (unlike the other Jewish holy days).

Thank you for posting this! This is exactly what we as a family felt led towards this year. We are seeking the truth, and not the man made kind. Bless you for speaking and writing what is on your heart:)

I have to offer another "Amein!" Thanks for posting about this...I'm such a coward - if I were to post something like this, I know lots of my readers and FB friends would get offended. But seriously, I need to get over that fear.

Blessings!
